Do color blind
glasses work?

Short answer

Sometimes, for some people, for some tasks. Brands such as EnChroma, Pilestone, and Colorlite sell notch filters aimed mostly at red-green anomalous trichromacy. Peer reviews and lab studies generally find that lenses alter colour appearance and may help discrimination in limited conditions, without creating “new” cone signals or curing dichromacy.

What the science usually shows

• Filters reshape the spectrum reaching the eye; they do not add missing photopigment.
• Anomalous trichromats (e.g. deuteranomaly) are the typical marketing target—not complete protanopia/deuteranopia or tritanopia.
• Improvements on informal or online plate tests do not equal normal colour vision or occupational clearance.

Before you buy

1. Know your type: try a free screening test and, if useful, a D-15 arrangement, then confirm clinically.
2. Check return policies and whether outdoor vs indoor lenses match how you actually live.
3. If you need a work or licence exam, ask whether tints are allowed—often they are not.

FAQ

Do color blind glasses cure color blindness?

No. Inherited CVD is not cured by filters. Lenses can change contrast and make some colours easier to tell apart for some anomalous trichromats; they do not restore a missing cone type.

Will glasses help me pass an Ishihara or D-15 exam?

Sometimes scores improve with tints; many formal occupational exams forbid or restrict them. Do not buy glasses solely to “pass” a regulated test without checking the rules.

Who benefits most?

People with milder red-green anomalous trichromacy (e.g. deuteranomaly) report more subjective benefit than people with complete dichromacy (protanopia/deuteranopia) or tritan defects.
