About This Free Online Color Blind Test

This free color blind test uses 18 Ishihara-style plates to screen for color vision deficiency (CVD). Each plate shows a number formed by dots of one color against a background of dots in a contrasting color. People with normal color vision can read the number; people with red-green or blue-yellow color blindness see a different number or nothing at all.

The test takes under 2 minutes to complete. Results appear instantly and are never stored or shared.

What Types of Color Blindness Does This Test Detect?

  • Deuteranopia the most common form of red-green color blindness (green-blind). Greens and reds appear similar, shifting toward yellow or brown. Affects ~6% of men.
  • Protanopia red-blind color vision. Reds appear very dark or black; red and green are easily confused. Affects ~2% of men.
  • Tritanopia blue-yellow color blindness. Blues appear greenish; yellows shift toward pink. Affects men and women equally but is much rarer.
  • Mild / partial CVD most people with color blindness have a partial rather than complete deficiency. The test includes severity plates to distinguish mild from strong CVD.

Is This a Medical Diagnosis?

No. This is a free online screening tool, not a clinical diagnosis. A screen-based test cannot match the precision of a professionally administered color vision test under controlled lighting. If you score as potentially color blind, consult an optometrist or ophthalmologist for a clinical assessment - especially if you work in a color-critical profession such as aviation, electrical work, or medicine.

What Should Designers Do After Testing?

If you're a designer or developer, take the test first to understand color blindness from the user's perspective. Then use our color blindness simulator to upload your designs and see how they look under each CVD type. This combination is the fastest way to audit visual content for WCAG 1.4.1 (Use of Color) compliance.
